View Full Version : What kind of window treatments do you have?

Our windows are a blank slate. In particular, I'm trying to come up with some simple, inexpensive treatments for the bedrooms, but I'd like to hear about whatever you have in your home and how you like it. Photos would be great if you have 'em. :)

Our last house had venetian blinds galore, and I can barely stand the thought of cleaning more of those. So I bought some roller shades but am returning them. I installed the largest one this afternoon and the first time I pulled the shade it bowed and fell out of its bracket, scratching our brand-new trim on the way down. :grr: Now I'm considering trying to make something.

We have wood blinds in every room of the house except the bedrooms. In the bedrooms we just have regular old toppers, and then the room darkening honeycomb blinds. (LOVE THESE!).

In our living room, the previous owner was a woodworker, and he made these AWESOME customs shelves that match the wood in the kitchen and blinds perfectly. The shelves go over the windows and sort of act like a topper, and are great to display decorative items. I'll try to get some pics sometime to post here. We have things like pictures, candlesticks and vases on them.

Have you thought about fabric shades?? I had these in the DR for a while..Then decided to just go with a valance to let the light in..

We need window treatments in our new house, too. The old window treatments just aren't cutting it. Currently I've only update the baby's room--she has venetian blinds, then sheers, then pale blue curtains.

In our family room and kitchen (across the back of the house) I'm itching to get rid of the yucky vertical blinds and I'm thinking about just doing valances or roman shades--curtains seem like something that will get yanked on as Katie gets older. Plus, nobody can see in those windows.

In our formal living room (which currently has no furniture! ) and dining room, I'm planning on sheers and simple long curtains--those rooms will be off limits to Katie unless we're with her, so I don't have to worry about her tugging on the curtains.

I'm not sure about the other bedrooms and the laundry room though.

On most windows we have mini blinds. All of the windows have either curtains on top of that or a valance. I am pretty boring when it comes to my window treatments but I don't like shears ( get spooked at the thought that someone could see me and I could not see them).

On pretty much every window in our house we have semi-sheer honeycomb fabric blinds. Not too expensive (we bought them at Home Depot), and very easy to install.

I need to start thinking about window treatments as well.

I see many people have brought up sheers. I've seen them in magazines and catalogs and like the way they look, but how well do they give you privacy? Meaning not letting anyone see through?

We have plantation blinds on every window in the house, including the obnoxious rectangular one over the bathtub in the master bedroom.

I had sheers up at a place I used to rent. Looking in at night from outside, they sort of "fuzzied" the view into the house. I think if you really want privacy, you need to use something along with the sheers (blinds, drapes, etc.).

Yes! I think I'm going to make one for our master bedroom. Still deciding on the other two bedrooms.

Thanks for the replies. Keep 'em coming. :)

We have curtains (ring top) in our bedroom. I made them. We have roman shades in our gust room (I made them). We have wood blinds in DH's office. My office has nothing (don't need ti). I am currently looking for the fabric for the livingroom drapes (since we live on 11+ acres with no neighbors, we really don't need any, but I think they would soften the room a bit). The kitchen will have roman shades (about to start demolition next month on the remodel job).

I'll post a few p[ics tomorrow, when I have time.
