View Full Version : What is your "primary" style?

I've not seriously decorated my apartment because I know I'm eventually moving. Recently, however, I decided that even if it is a 'temporary' home, I still deserve to make it lots homier.

So, what's the primary style that you use to decorate, and what made you select it?

Thanks in advance!

I love anything old!!! My house is full of auction, yardsale and fleamarket finds..I love the look of Oak, I think it's a warm wood..And this might sound crazy, but I love the feel of old wood..The only non-old things are the furniture on the TV side of the livingroom and the things in the kitchen..My DR set Is circa 1900 (about) all oak, hutch, server , table and 4 chairs for $200.00 at auction, so it' can be a cheap way to go too...

My house is a homey, come on in and put your feet up type..

I hate modern furniture..I think I was born in the wrong century...

Well, I may be the near-opposite of Tracy. I love contemporary decor! I love clean lines, simple fixtures, brushed nickel and maple wood. Our house isn't completely contemporary though -- we've got some family heirloom pieces (as well as some cruddy ol' hand-me downs) incorporated into our rooms, so it's a little eclectic and I'm trying to make it all work together. But the look I'm aiming for could be summed up as contemporary-but-not-uncomfortable. I spent a lot of time in college studying modern art and I love avant garde stuff, but I woudn't sacrifice comfort for it.

Hmmm...... my STYLE is not necessarily what I have in my house! LOL. I LOVE all things Pottery Barn..... except they tend to have more of the cherry and dark walnut woods, and I tend to be more Oakey, and Piney! Besides that.... I love all things PB!

My house right now has a lot of distressed natural wood furniture (our whole bedroom set and living room set), Denim, quilts, birch bark frames and candles etc. We're a little more "stylish" upstairs, and downstairs (our family living area) is much more mish mash, and we've got a sort of lodge theme we are starting to do down there. We're starting to collect neat bark frames and candles etc.... we have our denim couch down there, and we got two really neat shadow boxes for our walls over christmas with outdoorsey types of things inside each of them. My DH is a hunter and growing up in CO my whole life, I've always dreamt of living in a log home in the moutains......so we decided to start collecting decor for our dream home NOW! ;)

I started out more on the contemporary side...but as time goes on, and we live here more, I am venturing more torwars traditional. I have a lot of nuetral colors/earth tones.

I am a PB girl all the way. I can't afford most of their things, so I copy from the catologs. They are a great inspiration.

I lean toward traditional. Very dark wood etc.

Another PB'er here. What style do you call that, exactly? The "Pottery Barn" style?

Woods in our house tend to either be natural/distressed, or stained black. I bought a dining room table and asked for the whole thing to be custom stained black- the salesperson looked at me like I had six heads, but I think it's perfect!

Doggie... er, I mean... hehehe...

Actually I like contemporary, but functional. Also, anything in cherry or mahogany wood.

Traditional PB with some eclectic flair. Like with Little People and Legos everywhere. Just kidding. I like a little animal print here and there. And some vintage-y pieces around. New and old together.

I am all for the log cabin look. Pine furniture, flannel sheets, big soft earthy tone couch..........

I also love Victorian era stuff. Is that a style? But I don't think I could ever actually be comfy living in a whole house of that stuff.

i have a 'toddler' style going right now  plenty of crap artfully strewn about the place.

i guess i'm country, it goes with the house. although i wouldn't say my house was really decorated at all...even though we've been here a year now :blush1:

Thank you all so far :)

I spent the first couple years after my divorce just obtaining furniture. I took anything anyone would give me for free, because I had only a very old rocking chair that was my grandfather's when I moved to Texas.

Now, I have all this stuff. I love my overstuffed sofa (it's 8' long) and the loveseat/ottoman set but they're huge. And ripped. I might just recover them because they are so comfy.

I have my old dining room table but am using plastic chairs. My ex drove the kids down to see me one time and brought some of my stuff with him. The table was part of that trip. I'm working on getting 6 chairs that I can refinish to go around it, and I'll make a tablecloth to cover the table.

Otherwise, it's seriously bare walls and no sense of personality. I think I was so numb for a while there that I didn't pay attention. I've since decided it's time to live and let my home express who I am and that's what's got me frustrated. I can't afford what I like (Bombay Company and Pottery Barn). For years while I was married, we did the whole "young kids live here and we're proud of it" decor. That was wonderful, but my kids are in high school now and that won't work!

I'm really appreciating the ideas, though!

we are very basic and plain. I don't even know what you would call our taste in decorating. we have lots of wood in the house though. DH loves to build things and plus we both already have accumulated a lot.

Hmn...I would have to say arts & crafts-y. We live in a bungalow, so we decorate with a lot of mission style type furniture. And some Pottery Barn, as far as the couches, comforters, windown treatments, etc are concerned.

I would say we are pretty traditional. Of course,it depends on our home. Our last house was much more contemporary, and we furnisheed it with very contemporary furnishings and modern art. Our current home is an old plantation style house, so we keep it pretty traditional and in keeping with the house (little would anyone know that we have blue cable thorughout the plaster walls and this whole place networked!).

Very traditional....I love antiques....cherry and mahogany... We are about to build a house and I plan to make it Victorian or a old South type feel to it. I think that I was born in the wrong century as well!

This is EXACTLY what I was going to say, although I'd substitute the words *shabby chic* for the word *country*. But otherwise, that's us to a T. We're all about primary colored, plastic junk that makes obnoxious noises.

I would have to say we are leaning towards the traditional side. We recently moved & are going towards ornately carved cherry furniture, etc but we also have a tiny bit of potty barn thrown in. DH does like some it more than me though. We are still in the process of finding out style though. We were just discussing this the other day! We like traditional furniture but simple home decor if that makes sense!
